About this Event:

In this session from Greenbuild 2024, the art of cartography meets green building consulting. Cartography is the art of turning complex realities into understandable, navigable narratives. As sustainability consultants and leaders, we must similarly turn complex realities into thorough, correct, and persuasive narratives to guide sustainability strategy.

This cartography-inspired workshop, led by consultants with a long track record in guiding sustainability teams, will enrich your approach to the communication challenges of sustainability consulting. The workshop begins with conceptual background in cartography, whose objectives include setting an agenda, representing real-world features, filtering irrelevant data, and conveying an overall message.

There are many parallels between this and efforts to tell effective sustainability stories. The heart of the session is three interactive mapping-inspired exercises designed to improve your ability to form a comprehensive "big picture" from disparate data points, communicate simply and precisely to convey sustainability ideas, and determine the right amount of data needed for decision-making.

As we wrap up the workshop, we will showcase a collection of our own previous communication failures, transformed into inspiring examples of effective sustainability storytelling. We will delve into the power of visualization and show you how tools like the LEED scorecard can be re-imagined as a kind of map. Prepare to leave with heightened communication skills and a sharpened vision for collaborative strategy-building, empowering you to chart a course towards impactful, sustainable change in the built environment.
